EMU Drops a Heartbreaker in Overtime 95-88 to Roanoke in the First Round of the ODAC Tournament.

After a long day of women's basketball, the Maroons and Royals played through 45 minutes of determination but with only one victor. The Royals came into the game as the third seed, but the Maroons came in with nothing to lose. Roanoke pulled off the upset 95-88 over Eastern Mennonite in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.

Roanoke (16-9, 12-8 ODAC) came out on fire as they jumped out to an early 16-6 lead. The Maroons forced the Royals into turnovers and tough shots as they ended the half shooting just 33%. As the first half progressed, the Maroons got stronger keeping their lead until the Royals marched back from double digits and cut the lead to four points at the break.

Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, Va./Mt. Carmel Christian) came alive late in the first half scoring 10 of her 18 points in the opening period. The Royals outscored Roanoke 15-7 during the stretch to help EMU get back into the game.

The Maroons held the lead until midway through the second when Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) heated up with two straight treys giving EMU a three-point advantage. The Royals stormed to a their biggest lead with 5:20 remaining in the game. EMU led 74-59 as Stephanie Mathews (Harrisonburg, Va./Central) hit nine points in the second half. Roanoke chipped away at the lead and tied the game on two straight from downtown.

With under a minute remaining, the Royals hit two from the free throw line to take the lead. Roanoke answered with a free throw cutting the deficit to 77-76. EMU connected on 1-of-2 from the line after a foul giving them a two-point advantage with 20.6 seconds. The Maroons tied the game to send it in overtime with a bucket after an EMU turnover.

In overtime, the Maroons dominated as they built six-point advantage with 3:42 remaining. EMU would cut the lead to three points but would not catch the Maroons. Mullet ended the game with a team-high 19 points. Mathews and Grandstaff added 18 points. Laura Ludholtz (Mt. Crawford, Va./Fort Defiance) had 15 while Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) chipped in 12. EMU shot 37% for the game including 4-of-14 in overtime.

The Royals finish the season with a 20-6 overall record.
