HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University women's volleyball team snapped a three-match winning streak losing to Lynchburg College 3-1 at home. Scores were as follows 27-30, 28-30, 30-23, and 24-30.
Lynchburg (14-9, 7-3) would take game one 30-27, despite hitting .000 (12-12-48). Shannon Burton would lead the charge recording 11 of her game-high 47 assists. The Lady Royals committed 11 errors in the first game.
EMU (9-14, 4-5) would hang close with the Hornets in game two before LC opened a 24-19 edge. Mandy Snow led the way in game two with five of her team-high 17 kills. Lisa Berry (Dalton, Oh./Central Christian) kept EMU close with five kills and 11 digs. The Hornets would close out the match with a service ace by Leanne Costa to win 30-28.
After falling down 0-2, EMU would battle its way to a victory in game three 30-23. With the score tied 10-10, Berry's serving would give the Lady Royals a 14-10 edge. Becky Langstraat (Corvalis, Ore./Corvalis) added six kills aiding EMU to victory. EMU's defense stymied the Hornets with four team blocks including three by Stephanie Miller (Hartville, Oh./Central Christian).
In the fourth game, EMU would take a 3-0 lead before Lynchburg mounted a small comeback. Lynchburg would then hold a 14-9 lead. EMU would climb back and tie the game at 18-18, but LC would quickly march to a 26-21 lead and not look back taking game four 30-24.
Costa would end the match with 13 kills and 15 digs. Sarah Kirby added 10 kills and eight blocks for LC.
Langstraat ended with 17 kills, 17 digs, and five blocks for EMU. Berry tallied 11 kills, 25 digs, and three service aces. Miller recorded 39 assists, 21 digs, and five blocks.
EMU has two matches remaining. They will host Hollins University on Wednesday, October 29. The final match of the 2003 regular season will be on October 31 as the Lady Royals host Virginia Wesleyan. Both match times began at 7:00 p.m.
