The Lady Royals Received a Career High 28 Points From Freshman Carrie Grandstaff.
Greensboro, NC – The Lady Royals six game winning streak was broken as the Royals lost to Guilford College on the road by a final score of 85-75. Guilford opened the game with an 8-0 run and held a 13 point lead by a score of 15-2 with 15:27 to go in the first half. The Quakers physical defensive pressure forced 17 EMU turnovers in the first half but the Royals cut Guilford's lead to just seven points on two made free-throws by Freshman Laura Ludholtz (Mt. Crawford, VA/Fort Defiance) to make it 34-27 with 5:17 to play in the first half. Guilford responded to the Royals charge going on a 12-4 run to close out the first half and the Royals trailed 46-31 going into the locker room. In the first half Guilford connected on five three-point baskets and scored 17 points off of EMU turnovers.
In the second half the Royals stormed back to cut Guilford's lead to three points. Freshman Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, VA/Mt. Carmel Christian) scored 13 of her career high 28 points in the game during a span of three and a half minutes followed by six quick points in the paint from Senior Emily Misak (Hutchinson, KS/Chaparral) to cap a 21-9 run as the Royals closed to within three points 55-52 with 13:40 to play. The game was a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the game as the Royals stayed within nine points of the Quakers but trailing by only four points 74-70 with 3:00 left to play. But the Royals could not overcome the physical play of the Quakers as Guilford connected on four free-throws in the final 0:40 to win the game 85-75.
Grandstaff led all scorers with 28 points while recording three assists. Freshmen Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, VA/Central) finished with 12 points and four rebounds while Ludholtz added 11 points and three assists.
