Lady Royals Cruise to Their Sixth Straight Victory.
Harrisonburg, VA – The Lady Royals (10-2, 5-2 ODAC) were looking to avoid a mental and emotional letdown after defeating rival Bridgewater College on Saturday as they hosted a scrappy and determined basketball team from Mary Baldwin College (3-9, 1-2 AWCC).
Early in the contest the Royals established a fast tempo pushing the ball up the court looking for points in transition. Freshman Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) scored the first points for the Royals on a short jumper from the foul-line and Senior center Emily "Jo" Misak (Hutchinson, KS/Chaparral) connected on a jumper of her own on the next play to help the Royals take a 4-3 lead early. Neither team was able to mount a significant run in the first-half as both teams combined for 29 turnovers in the half until the 13 minute mark when the Royals went on a 18-5 run and built a 13 point lead with 4:34 to go in the first-half. The Royals converted two three-point plays on consecutive possessions to start the run with Freshman Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, VA/Central) and Senior Emily Mullet (Harrisonburg, VA/EMHS) both making their foul-shots after being fouled on successful shot attempts. Sophomores Regina Sours (Luray, VA/Mt. Carmel Christian) and Shantee' Bryant (Verona, VA/R. E. Lee) came off the bench and contributed a basket each to help the Royals take a 29-16 lead.
Freshman Laura Ludholtz (Mt. Crawford, VA/Fort Defiance) sparked her game with defense coming up with a blocked shot which she corralled and took coast to coast for two points, and on the next play Ludholtz broke into the passing lane and intercepted a sloppy pass for two more breakaway points. Junior point guard Heather Maslauskas (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) closed out the first half with a bang hitting a three-point basket at the buzzer to give the Royals a 39-20 lead at half time.
In the second-half it was more of the same with the Royals maintaining a comfortable 20 point lead for most of the half. With 2:06 to go in the game the Royals enjoyed a 26 points lead, the largest lead of the game seven Royals came off the bench and combined for 27 points in the win. With the win the Royals extend their winning streak to six games and will look to keep things rolling as they take on Guilford College and Emory & Henry this weekend.
Renalds led the Royals with 16 points and also pulled down six rebounds while Emily Mullet added 12 points and two assists on 5-9 shooting. Mathews finished with nine points and eight rebounds while both Ludholtz and Freshman Carrie Grandstaff (Luray, VA/Mt. Carmel Christian) finished with seven points and two rebounds each.
