Lady Royals Start Homecoming The Right Way
Playing in front of the biggest crowd of the year, the Lady Royals did not disappoint as they took a 3-0 sweep from Mary Baldwin. Saturday's noon match was part of Homecoming Weekend at EMU, as well as Parents Recognition Day.
The women scored first in game one and only trailed once at 7-6. Using an 8-2 run to take control, Eastern Mennonite grabbed the momentum with a 25-20 win.
Mary Baldwin skipped to a 10-7 edge in the second game before EMU took over. The Lady Royals scored eight straight during a 12-2 run, vaulting them to a 19-12 lead and 25-16 victory.
Game three looked like an even battle until the women struck a 7-2 run to go up 18-13. The teams went back and forth with short runs until the Fighting Squirrels had the score tied at 23-23. But kills from setter Mattie Lehman (New Paris, IN/Bethany Christian) and middle hitter Kayla Smeltzer (Richmond, VA/Maggie L. Wagner Governors School) sealed a 25-23 win.
Kyla Moorefield (Danville, VA/Tunstall) was a dominating force, leading EMU with nine kills, four service aces, two solo blocks and three block assists. Lynae Fry (Archbold, OH/Archbold) chipped in four blocks assists.
Smeltzer finished with six kills on only 12 attempts. Jillien Puster (Mechanicsville, VA/Middlesex) got her first start of the year and landed seven kills and a pair of service aces. Lehman had 23 assists and two aces.
Libero Brittany Childress (Gloucester, VA/Christchurch) led all players with 19 digs.
The non-conference win snaps a five-match losing skid and gives EMU the season series win over Mary Baldwin, 2-1. The Lady Royals (6-16/0-8 ODAC) return to league play Tuesday night, when they host Hollins on Senior Recognition Night.
