The Eastern Mennonite University women's cross country team competed at the South/Southeast NCAA Regional Preview Meet hosted by Christopher Newport University on a humid Saturday afternoon and earned a first place performance in in 6k course.
"Overall, this was a very challenging meet due to unseasonably high temperatures and humidity," said interim head coach Hannah Chappell-Dick.
Senior Michaela Mast (Broadway, Va./Eastern Mennonite) secured another first place win with a time of 23:46, while teammate Elizabeth Nisly (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) finished in second place with a 24:15 time.
"Michaela ran unchallenged, securing another win," said Chappell-Dick. "Elizabeth, Megan, and Abigail ran very close to their season best times despite the conditions, suggesting that they will soon be ready for a break through."
On the men's side, Avila and Allen competed on a 7.69k course. Allen came in at 19th overall with a time of 29:00, while Avila finished 21st in 29:31.
"The runners had to be tough and resilient during this race, and this grit will help them as they move into the championship season," said Chappell-Dick.
The Royals will return to this course on Nov. 11 for Regionals.
"If the weather cooperates, it should lend itself to fast times in November," commented Chappell-Dick.
Before Regionals, however, the men's and women's teams will compete on Oct. 28 at the ODAC Championships hosted by Virginia Wesleyan. The women will see a close battle for the top 5 spots at the championship.
