Dave Drafton (Alexandria, Va./Howard Gardner) scored with 1:55 left in overtime to give EMU's soccer men an intense 2-1 win at Wesley College in Dover, Del., Wednesday night.
The game was played in a consistent rain and each of the three goals were dramatic.
Both teams had chances early, but the Royals got the board first in the 29th minute. Sophomore Caleb Lasrado (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) pressured Wesley's keeper on a goal kick and stole the ball from him. Lasrado then drove in a bullet from 30 yards out to make it 1-0.
Scoring chances were minimal until late in the first half. J.P. Amougou sent up a long ball for the Wolverines, pulling out EMU keeper Cody Martin (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle). WC's Darius-David Robinson was there to scoop up the ball and hit the empty net, equalizing the game just 1:31 before halftime.
After a back-and-forth second period, Eastern Mennonite flat-out dominated the extra time.
The Royals fired five shots over the first eight minutes before Drafton scored the game-winning goal in the 99th minute. He drove to the end line and his shot to the center glanced off a Wesley defender before hitting the net.
After finishing even at shots during regulation at 10-10, EMU finished with a 16-10 edge. Martin made three saves in goal. The Royals had a multi-faceted attack, as four men each took at least two shots. Juan Luna (Mount Jackson, Va./Stonewall Jackson), David Shafer (Maitland, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and Daniel Obour (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) each had three attempts.
Now 2-1 on the season, the soccer men get their home opener this Saturday, welcoming William Peace to Harrisonburg at 7:00pm. EMU is also at home next week Tuesday against Ferrum.
