Golf Men Again Show Improvements In Final Fall Outing

Three of EMU's four golfers shot their low score of the year as the Royals finished up their fall season Monday and Tuesday at the VSGA Intercollegiate Championship. The men were one of 18 teams from Virginia playing on the par-71 Stonehenge Golf and Country Club in Richmond, Va.

Senior Andrew Alderfer (Faber, Va./Nelson County) hit 23 pars over the two-day event and shot rounds of 78 and 77. He tied his season low round on Monday before bettering it by one stroke today as he finished tied for 51 out of the 98 golfers on the course at 155 (+13).

Junior-transfer Riley Kingsley (North Newton, Kan./Newton) had his best tournament as a Royal, shooting a 78 on Monday before slipping to an 84. He shot a team-best five birdies over the two days, including a two on the par-3 No. 9 on Monday, and finished tied for 73rd at 162 (+20).

Benjamin Shenk (Elkton, Va./Page County) shot rounds of 88 and 84, with Tuesday's round his second-best of the fall, and came in 88th at 172 (+30). Sophomore Chris Fenn (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) continued his improvement with a low round of 90 on Monday, followed by a 100. He tied for 95th at 190 (+48).

As a team, Eastern Mennonite combined for a 331 on Monday. They added a few strokes on Tuesday, as did nearly all of the teams, adding a 345 for a two-day total of 679 (+111).

Virginia Wesleyan shot a 289 on day one and held on for a three-stroke victory at 592 (+24). Damian Beasley of Ferrum shot under par both days to win the individual medalist by three strokes at 137 (-5).

This wraps up the fall portion of the 2017-18 for EMU's golf team. They open the spring in late March, culminating in the ODAC Championships on April 22-24.
