EMU's baseball men continue to build up steam, winning two of their first three games at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Royals play one more in the Palmetto State, getting Wilkes Tuesday at 12:30pm, before returning to Harrisonburg for their ODAC opener against Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday.
Fredonia 6, EMU 5
On Sunday, the Royals (9-5) started quickly against Fredonia (3-1), plating three runs in the bottom of the first. Damon Frazier (Waynesboro, Va./Wilson Memorial) started it with an RBI single, and a wild pitch and error brought in the next two runs. Matt Curry (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit a one-out single in the second, and scored on another wild pitch to make it 4-0.
The Blue Devils plated single runs in the third and fifth, before tying the score with two runs scoring on a two-out passed ball in the eighth.
EMU, meanwhile, was struggling to cash in on their chances, leaving 10 runners on base between the third and eighth innings. They left the bases loaded in the seventh and had a runner thrown out at home to end the eighth.
Fredonia came knocking again in the ninth, putting runners on second and third with one out. The go-ahead run came in on a sacrifice fly, and a costly insurance run scored on a two-out error.
Down 6-4, Brett Lindsay (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) started EMU's rally with a one-out single and Ray Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) followed with a pinch-hit walk. Lindsay scored on a Fredonia error, but the tying run was stranded on third when Tyler Wilcher's (Staunton, Va./Buffalo Gap) hard-hit chopper up the middle turned into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Frazier batted 2-5 with a run and the team's only RBI. Lindsay and Jacob Merica (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) each singled and earned two walks, touching home once.
Frazier also started on the mound and got a no-decision after striking out seven and allowing only one earned run in 6.0 innings. Tyler Campbell (Luray, Va./Luray) threw 2.1 frames, but took the loss with four runs allowed, although only one was earned.
EMU 5, Mount Aloysius 3
After a quick move to a different field, Eastern Mennonite started quickly in Sunday's night game against Mount Aloysius (0-7). Merica leadoff the game with a single and Daniel Scott (Moneta, Va./Staunton River) followed with an RBI triple for a 1-0 lead after two batters. Lindsay added an RBI single and Tyler McFadden made it 3-0 with an RBI groundout.
The men made it 4-0 in the fifth, when Scott lead off with a double and came home on Frazier's RBI grounder.
Right-hander John Judy (Shanks, W.V./Hampshire) worked around small jams until the sixth when the Mounties opened with a walk, double and single to cut the lead in half, 4-2. Michael Wilhite (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) took over on the mound and ended the rally. He struck out two batters and catcher Justin Parrish (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) caught MAC's runner napping at first base for three outs.
Mount Aloysius got one more in the seventh on a two-out error, but the Royals rebuilt the two-run margin in their next at-bat. Lindsay led off with a single and Parrish slapped a single to bring him home.
Wilhite breezed through the eighth, and closer Ryan Brewer (Martinsville, Va./Franklin County) earned his fourth save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth. It was his second appearance of the day after having also pitching in the early game.
Scott and Lindsay each had three hits and combined for three runs and two RBIs. Parrish added a pair of singles and an RBI.
Judy improved to 2-0 with the win, giving up two runs over 5.0+ innings. Wilhite struck out five in his 3.0 frames.
EMU 2, New England 1
Monday's game against the Pilgrims was a great baseball contest between two solid programs. New England (1-2) got on the board first with a single run after a two-out rally in the top of the second.
After getting the ball out of the infield only one time over the first three innings, the Royals rallied with back-to-back infield singles with one out in the fourth. After a strikeout, Tricarico loaded the bases with a short single. Wilcher then came through with a clutch single to left center, chasing home two runners to give Eastern Mennonite the lead.
Riley Wesp (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) took over for starter Bailey Hall (Daleville, Va./James River) in the fifth and worked his way through two scoreless innings. Jonathan Nagle (Chesapeake, Va./Portsmouth Christian) relieved in the seventh and stranded a handful of baserunners before getting a groundball double play to end the game. The two relievers combined to scatter four hits while striking out five in five frames of work. Wesp earned his first collegiate win while Nagle got his first save. Hall allowed one run in 4.0 innings.
Tyler McFadden (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk at the plate. Tricarico added two hits. Frazier and Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) scored the lone EMU runs.
