Baseball player Zach Roberts (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) is running with the baton as one of EMU's few returners from last year, batting .478 (11-for-23) in the Royals' 5-2 effort last week. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference noticed and today recognized Roberts as the ODAC Player of the Week.
The Eastern Mennonite junior had multiple hits in four of the games (including five doubles), and added eight walks for a .625 on-base percentage. The shortstop also had a perfect fielding percentage over 29 total chances.
Roberts batted 2-3 with two walks and three RBIs in Friday's 9-4 win over Penn State-Harrisburg, with each hit giving EMU the lead. Roberts was clutch all week, including Sunday's dramatic 7-6 win over Penn State-Altoona, where he tied the game with an RBI double in the last inning, and then scored the game-winning run.
Through 10 games, Roberts has a .400 batting average and leads EMU with 12 hits, nine runs, seven RBIs and 11 walks.
The Royals are 6-4 on the year as they prepare for a game at Christopher Newport on Tuesday. First pitch in Newport News is 2:00pm.
