While EMU had no contests during the week of Nov. 4-10, we still selected an athlete that had a stellar season as the Royals Athlete of the Week. Jessica Goertzen (Goessel, Kan./Goessel) recently completed her senior season as a captain with the women’s volleyball team. She was the only player from her class to play all four years. While at Eastern Mennonite University she played for three different coaches, and she said her senior year was by far her favorite.
In the beginning of the season Jess was excited about the new talented recruits that were coming into the program. She and the rest of the upperclassmen wanted to welcome them into a positive environment. During the year the new recruits and the returners continued to improve to what would be the best season in Jess’ career here. “We surprised many good teams this year,” said Jess.
Something that Jess said she will take from her experience as an athlete at EMU is that with hard work and dedication great things will happen. As a captain this year, Jess learned the qualities of a leader. “I wanted to inspire the younger players and teach them what the program was about,” she explained.
The best memory of the year came in their first ODAC win in four years. The Royals came from behind in the contest, winning the final two games for a 3-2 victory. “To see what our team was like when I was a freshman to what it was this year was amazing,” said Jess.
Jess will graduate in the spring with a degree in elementary education. She is considering moving to Guatemala to teach and coach volleyball.
