Eastern Mennonite University Athletic Training provides EMU
Athletics with sports injury prevention, injury care and
post-injury restoration. Nationally certified and state licensed
athletic trainers (ATCs) provide medical coverage for athletes who
are on teams sponsored by EMU. The medical staff consists of Head
Athletic Trainer Mike Downey, MS ATC, and Assistant Athletic
Trainer Carleen Overacker, ATC. They are aided by athletic training
students from nearby James Madison University as well as EMU
work-study students. EMU ATCs are present at all home contests and
often provide care for both home and visiting athletes. Referral
support is also provided on campus through the EMU Wellness Suite
for nursing, physician and counseling services. Orthopedic
physician referral can also be provided by the EMU Athletic
Training staff.
The Athletic Training Room is located in room 140 of the
University Commons. It is conveniently located near the team locker
rooms, adjacent to the three indoor sports courts, and just inside
the Commons team entrance area. The Athletic Training Room has
facilities for hydrotherapy treatment; electrical, ultrasound and
other modality treatment; an athlete taping/wrapping area and a
rehabilitation/exercise area with treadmill, elliptical machine,
stationary cycle and other rehabilitation equipment.
Athletic Training Mission Statement
The Eastern Mennonite University Athletic Training
Department exists to provide Athletic Training health care services
to student-athletes who participate on EMU's NCAA athletic teams.
The Athletic Training Department strives to prevent injuries, to
provide prompt treatment of injuries when they occur and to
rehabilitate athletes whose injuries require restorative care. It
will be the goal of the Athletic Training Department to administer
its responsibilities with both professional skills and with
compassionate care. Any care given will be in support of the
Athletic Departments' goals and mission and will fulfill the
greater mission of the University to share with the athlete the
